Disaster Relief America's Second Harvest affiliates first became involved with disaster relief in 1989 following Hurricane Hugo and the Loma Prieta earthquake that struck San Francisco and the Central California Coast. Since then, the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC has taken an active role in recovery efforts following major disasters, working with FEMA, The American Red Cross, The Salvation Army and the North Carolina Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NC VOAD). Through such collaborative partnerships, the America's Second Harvest network is well prepared to respond when disaster strikes anywhere across the country.
