Operating from a 65,000 square-foot facility and a fleet of nine trucks, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC collects, transports, inspects, sorts and stores more than 9 million pounds of food and other grocery products each year.
Within one year of opening its doors in 1982, the Second Harvest Food Bank moved from its 1,800 square-foot home on Polo Road to a 4,500 square-foot warehouse next door, and then on to a 9,700-square-foot warehouse on Liberty Street. In 1991, a new 34,000-square-foot warehouse was constructed at 3655 Reed Street after completion of a $1.37 million capital campaign.
A 30,000 square-foot expansion project was
completed in the late summer of 2003 following a $2 million capital campaign. Today, the expanded 65,000 square-foot facility includes 44,000-cubic feet of freezer space and 41,000-cubic feet of cooler space.
