Who We Serve Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC serves as a supplemental source of donated food for more than 390 non-profit partner agencies that provide food to the hungry and others in need through more than 650 programs across 18 counties, from Boone to Burlington. Partner agency programs include: emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, rescue missions, halfway houses, domestic violence shelters, group homes, low-income day care centers, food box delivery programs, Meals-On-Wheels, Kids Cafes, and congregate feeding programs for seniors and children. Each year, Second Harvest Food Banks serves more than 134,000 different individuals in need through its partner agencies that provide emergency food assistance. More than one third of those served are children; many are seniors. Today, Second Harvest Food Bank operates 10 Kids Cafe sites in collaboration with various community partners, and has also launched the BackPack Program to address childhood hunger in rural communities. Another program of America's Second Harvest, BackPack sites provide children at risk of hunger with a backpack full of nutritious, child-friendly food to take home over the weekends during the school year.
