What is the Souper Bowl of Caring?
A nationwide, youth-led effort which encourages people to give one dollar while leaving worship services on Super Bowl Sunday. The dollars collected are donated to help feed people who for whatever reason cannot provide food for themselves or their family. Last year, youth throughout the country raised almost $5 million during Souper Bowl of Caring.
How does participation work?
An announcement is made asking parishioners to give one dollar each as they leave worship the morning of the big game. Young people holding large soup pots stand at exits and receive the donations and then send every dollar directly to the hunger-relief charity of their group's choice. Participants are asked to report their figures to www.souperbowl.org or by calling 1-800-358-SOUP so that totals can be determined.
What is the Service Blitz?
The Souper Bowl of Caring Service Blitz gives young people the opportunity to experience hands-on service, encouraging them to volunteer in the organizations that receive their donations. Second Harvest Food Bank will hold its Service Blitz on the Saturday before game day. Volunteer projects will include sorting, inspecting and repacking donated food for distribution.
How can we get involved?
We hope you will consider the Second Harvest Food Bank as the recipient of your collection this year. But we leave the choice up to your group. All we ask is that you participate. The Souper Bowl of Caring comes at a time of year when donations are down because the flurry of holiday giving is over. Yet hunger never takes a vacation. To make arrangements to be a part of the Souper Bowl Service Blitz at Second Harvest Food Bank, Margaret Turner, Development Manager, at (336) 784-5770 or email mturner@secondharvest.org.
