Tyson Foods, Food Lion Lend Helping Hand in Fight
Against Hunger in Winston-Salem

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina receives 19.5 tons of protein

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 8, 2009 – Each week, more than 30,000 residents of North Carolina are short of food. To help alleviate that burden, on Dec. 11 at 10 a.m., Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE:TSN) and Food Lion will partner together to donate more than 39,000 pounds of much-needed chicken to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. The donation event will take place at the Food Bank and will be attended by representatives from Tyson Foods and Food Lion.

“This significant food donation from Tyson and Food Lion will allow us to impact lives when the need for food has never been greater,” said Clyde Fitzgerald, executive director of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. “Donations of poultry and other high protein foods are especially valuable as we approach the holiday season. This donation will allow us to provide our agencies with more healthy, nutritious options.”

The Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina serves 18 counties in North Carolina, and provides food to nearly 400 partner agencies including soup kitchens, homeless shelters and food pantries. In 2008 and 2009, the Food Bank distributed more than 9 million pounds of food and other grocery products. The Food Bank will distribute a portion of the 19.5 tons of donated protein to their local agencies. Currently, the partner agencies are seeing an average increase of 76 percent more families coming to them for food assistance and 13 of the serviced counties have unemployment rates above the state average of 10.8 percent.

Tyson Foods is participating in Food Lion LLC’s “Hunger Has a Cure” campaign, which allows customers to purchase read-made food boxes or donate non-perishable items, with the goal of raising 1.2 million pounds of food for Feeding America agencies. The program runs from Nov. 11 through Dec. 30.

Since 2000, Tyson Foods has been a leader in the fight against hunger. The company is actively engaged in food-donation events and fund-raising activities year-round to benefit those in need. The protein given by Tyson today brings the company’s total in-kind donations since 2000 to more than 71 million pounds. This milestone equates to more than 216 million meals donated to food banks and agencies serving local communities around the country. Last year alone, Tyson donated nearly 12 million pounds of protein to Feeding America. For more information on how to get involved in the fight against hunger, go to http://hungerrelief.tyson.com/.
