Second Harvest Food Bank Receives Grants for
Childhood Hunger Programs and Operations
Winston-Salem , NC — September 17, 2008 —Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC has received the following grants for its BackPack and Kids Cafe programs, as well as its primary food distribution program, which serves as a significant source of food for more than 400 non-profit organizations in 18 Northwest NC counties.
BackPack Program
The BackPack program, a national program of Feeding America and implemented locally, addresses childhood hunger and malnutrition in rural communities by providing elementary school children who are most at risk of hunger at selected elementary school sites with backpacks containing nutritious, kid-friendly food to take home over the weekends during the school year.

Kids Cafe Program
Kids Cafes, a national program of Feeding America and implemented locally, provides youth at risk of hunger in urban communities with an evening meal, homework assistance, tutoring, and recreational and enrichment activities in a safe and nurturing environment.

Food Distribution Program
With support from many generous food and financial donors and the helping hands of some 2,000 volunteers, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC plays a critical role in hunger-relief efforts for the region, helping to provide access to food to those who cannot afford it so that they can survive and even thrive. Through our primary food distribution program, we solicit, transport, inspect, sort, warehouse and distribute donated food to more than 400 non-profit partner agencies that serve people at risk of hunger and others in need from Boone to Burlington.
