Winston-Salem Symphony to Hold Food Drive at
November Concerts

Winston-Salem, NC – The Winston-Salem Symphony will hold a food drive at its November 22 and 24 concerts, Peace, Fate and Remembrance, at the Stevens Center of the UNC School of the Arts. The food drive will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina, which serves 18 counties in our region.

The Symphony’s food drive honors the memory of Greensboro composer Russell Peck, whose Peace Overture will be performed on the concerts.  Peck died earlier this year at the age of 64, having spent more than 30 years collaborating with his friend Marshall Gordon to create and implement a worldwide policy for eradicating starvation. As Peck wrote, “A starvation-free world is utterly imperative for any hope of world peace.” He believed that continued starvation results in ongoing structured conflict, which cripples efforts to improve global living conditions.

Concert-goers are invited to bring non-perishable food items to the concerts.  Most needed items include:  boxed cereals; canned meats, vegetables, fruits, stews, soups, pork & beans; boxed juices and milk; peanut butter and jelly in plastic jars; pudding cups; crackers; fruit cups; fruit bars and raisins.  Second Harvest Food Bank will provide food collection barrels and Symphony volunteers will provide assistance to those making donations.

In addition to Peace Overture, the concerts include Johannes Brahms’ Shicksalslied (Song of Fate) and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Requiem, both works for orchestra and chorus.  The Winston-Salem Symphony Chorale and the Cantata Singers from the UNC School of the Arts will join the orchestra, all conducted by music director Robert Moody.  Tickets for the concerts are $15 - $55; student rush tickets are $6 at the door.  For tickets and information, call 336-464-0145 or visit www.wssymphony.org
